sub-par fastplant execution

hopefully by now you realize this was a dick-around session. a horrible day skating is still better than a great day at work. curb session.

Brian's canoe update

since i was back home for the day and had some time to kill in the morning i figured i'd document some of the skatespots i grew up on in downtown Emmaus. now remember this was back in '88-'91 so if you think these spots are beat, you have to imagine seeing them through the eyes of a 13-16 year old. (they were a lot smoother back then too) first up, the "Air Bank". i knew the girl that lived here and if her car was parked here she'd come out and move it so we could skate.

we'd been skating the Air Bank for over a year before we looked farther down the alley and found this gap.

Laundry Mat Gap. the guardrail used to be lower so it was easier to clear. when Streets on Fire came out we tried to do Natas spins on the little pole sticking out of the ground. (I'm sure about 3 people who read this will know what that means)

the very first handrail i ever "cavemanned". i'm not ashamed to say it took me about an hour to psyche myself up for the first attempt.

Medical Building gap

now if i had to pick one spot that really defined me "growing up" on a skateboard in suburban america in the late 80's/early 90's, it would have to be "Weis Bank".

i loved skating this place and it was THE hotspot at one point in time. on more than one occassion i've participated in 15+ kid sessions here. stalls, slides, disasters, blunts, ollies, you name it, it went down here. this is also one of the few places i used to skate by myself trying to link endless blunt to stall variations on seemingly endless summer afternoons. the parking lot has since been resurfaced and those slices in the bank didn't used to be there but it's easy to see which section was most heavily sessioned.

my friend jeremy and i used to have fakie blunt competions here on my birthday to see who could land one first. if we tied we'd go onto blunt variations and if we were still tied after that we'd set up a high ollie competion.

Weis Bank ruled. here's a handrail right by the bank that we'd caveman on the regular. my one friend who was goofy footed used to "throw on" grinds after that one H-street video came out.

i remember being very stoked in jr. high to find this little gem when they built the new beer distributor in town. somewhere i have pics of me skating this bump in a D.R.I. shirt, Alva shorts and flourescent orange Chuck Taylors.

from there i climbed up to the train tracks i used to walk to school if i missed the bus or was heading into town to skate. the AF Skins graf is pretty damn faded but it's still there after all these years.

the Misfits one was still there too and just how i remembered it...shitty.

"DON'T BE BLIND"???

this is the logo we used for our skate team in jr. high that i stole from an old Lucero ad. we were called Team Smiley. GB! (finally got see them about 15 years after i spraypainted this)

i was bummed to see someone had touched up my old Uniform Choice graf and added their own pieces. (Lehigh Valley ='d skin central back then)

OK enough with memory lane. time to meet up with some heads for soccer.

these shots are from after we were done playing and i got in goal and let everybody fire away.

denied!

allowed.

"JUUUST a bit outside".

hanging from the crossbar giving everybody a free shot at me or the goal.

Chad had the right idea.

it's out of focus but i feel it still captures the intensity of the moment

then it was off to whack-a-bucket

Chris gives Don some pointers. "Hold it like this".

i thought the guy behind me and Don was bummed on our crew for taking over the range but he was just laughing at us

"Dude I hit the barrel I swear"

Golf with your friends.

Heyaa. I'm from Emmaus, and it's kinda funny to see what you skated back in the day, and how it still is part of the skate community now. For example, the beer distributor is where I learned my first kickflip- the fly gap, I think you called it, is still a bit fun to skate. I actually know the person that lives there NOW. heh. If you ever get back into emmaus again, I suggest checking out the high school on sundays after 5, jefferson sundays around 9 at night, and lincoln at around 7. By that time, most cops are away, and they've got some pretty sick things to try out.. Add me on myspace, I'm on the skateboarding in the 610 thing, I'm the one wearing a hat in a pretty shitty quality picture.
Conor.
